Student Success Initiative

One of the features of living on campus at Dixie State is participating in the Student Success Initiative.  It is a multi-faceted program designed to help you succeed in your collegiate endeavors as well as cultivating skills to enhance your personal life.
Really, this program was made with you in mind.
One of the aspects of the Student Success Initiative is a one on one meeting/discussion with your Resident Assistant (RA).  This week, your RAs will be stopping by your room to meet with you for the first of four sessions this school year.  You and your RA will be setting goals and discussing an action plan for success.  Every member of the Resident Life staff wants you to have the best year ever.  This goal-setting session will be one way we help you succeed.
The core areas of focus are Responsibility, Involvement, Leadership, and Academic Success.
Start thinking about what you would like to achieve in one or more of these areas.  Your RA will facilitate a discussion and guide your goal-setting.
This discussion session will be as meaningful as you make it.

CIS 1200 Orientation Schedule

Don't be one of the countless Dixie students who have failed CIS 1200.
Attending an orientation is required to begin the course. Those that want to test out of the class must still attend an orientation and then sign up for an appointment to test out during the (short) week of September 2-5. View the orientation schedule here. Orientation meetings take place in the Smith Computer Center (SCC) room 119. Call 652-7953 with any other questions.

Avoid the Freshman 15

If you are worried about packing on a few pounds this year, a inexpensive solution can be found right here on campus.
The FITNESS CENTER is located near the stadium. They have a variety of strength training and cardiovascular machines as well as dumbbell and free weights. The Fitness Center is open Monday-Thursday 6am-10pm, Friday 6am-7pm, and Saturday 7am-2pm. It is closed on Sunday.
To access the Fitness Center you can sign up for a course (PEHR 1088, 1089, 1090 or 1091). The course does require a certain number of days a week and hours of exercise. There are also assessments and required activity hours. If you are already used to working out, sign up for an (somewhat) easy A.
For those that don't have multiple days a week to visit the Fitness Center, you can still use the facility for $25 a semester. That's a steal! You may also add swimming, personal training, and other services for a fee. Check out the services pricing list here.
The Fitness Center also sponsors Intramurals. Check out the fall schedule.
Call the Fitness Center with any other questions at 652-7989 or email them at fitness@dixie.edu.

Ice Cream Social and Morning After

The ice cream social was a ton of fun. The Resident Life building was packed. Spontaneous games of Ultimate Frisbee, Volleyball, and Basketball took place afterward.
For more fun, come to the Karaoke Party tonight at 7:30pm at the Resident Life building.

Many new faces grace the Towers

Check-ins started today. Over 90 new students arrived with family and friends to help them move in. There is a lot of excitement in the air as roommates are meeting each other. It's a fun day.
The day isn't over. We have an ice cream social at 7pm tonight at Resident Life sponsored by RHA. The Resident Assistants really pushed this activity. We hope to see an amazing turnout.
Speaking of Resident Assistants, we are here to help you. There are RAs for each Tower. We're easy to find because of these convenient little signs in our windows.

Most of us have been in the area for at least a couple of years. Feel free to ask us about local shopping, eating, entertainment, etc. Also, browse this survival guide for things to do in St. George (restaurants, outdoor activities, movies) as well as an overview of campus services. It is a very helpful resource. It will also be linked on the sidebar of this blog for easy referral.

Library

I know how desperately you want to start studying and checking out books. The Val A. Browning Library is open 7 days a week. It is building 5 on the campus map. It is open Monday-Thursday from 7:30am to 11:45pm. It opens Friday at 7:30am as well but closes at 6:45pm. Saturday hours are from 12noon until 6:45pm. The library is also open Sunday from 3pm-9:45pm.
There is a computer lab downstairs at the library. It closes one hour before the library each day and is not open at all on Saturday.
To check out a book, you need your Student ID Card with current semester sticker. NO EXCEPTIONS! Books can be checked out for 3 weeks at a time. In addition to books, they also have CDs and DVDs. The collection is small, but there are a few decent movie options. Save yourself some cash and check there first. Of course, you can use the online catalog to look up your selection before you leave your apartment.
Many teachers place a copy of their text book on reserve at the library. If you are waiting on financial aid or a paycheck before you can get your books, you can take your Student ID card to the library and likely be able to check out your text book for 1-4 hours for use in the library. If you are short a little cash and can't afford all your books, see which are available in the library and buy the others that aren't available. You do risk your book not being available when you need it, so don't put your assignments off until the last minute.
The library staff is very kind and willing to help however possible. Do visit the library.

Internet Access

You've found one place to access the internet, but you have other options as well.
RESIDENT LIFE: There are a few computers in the Resident Life Building that are all connected to the internet. These computers are available 24 hours a day. These computers are to aid students in completing their assignments. Those residents needing the computer for school work will be given precedence over residents using the computer for recreational purposes.
LIBRARY: Don't despair. There are more computers in the Val A. Browning Library. Hours for the library can be found in this post. This computer lab will be open Monday-Thursday 8am-11pm. Friday hours are 8am-6pm. The lab is closed on Saturday. Sunday hours for the lab are 3pm-9pm.
SMITH COMPUTER CENTER: There are even more computers in the Smith Computer Center just north of the stadium. The SCC is open Monday-Thursday 7am-11pm. Friday hours are 7am-6pm. The lab is open 9am-5pm on Saturday. The SCC is closed on Sunday.
There are computers available in the Udvaar Hazy Building as well. These labs are sometimes used as classrooms, so access is occasionally limited.
PRINTING: Students are given 50 pages free to print each semester. These prints can be used on any computer that requires a sign-in (Smith Computer Center, Business and Library Labs). More prints can be purchased at the Cashier's Office and during limited hours at the Smith Computer Center. A printer is also available in the Resident Life building.
For the fortunate few who came to school with a laptop, there are wireless internet services on campus. Access to wireless services requires setup. Easy to follow instructions are available by clicking this link. You can set up your connection while using wired access in your room. The first time you are within range of the wireless signal, a box will pop up requesting your username and password. Once it has been entered, it will be saved and you will be automatically connected in the future.

Welcome!

Welcome, Dixie State College students, to the Nisson Towers.
